Access to Care

Using innovative, data-driven approaches, our group’s research aims to improve and facilitate access to primary care, particularly for vulnerable and underserved communities. Our research integrates new technologies and novel analytical approaches to evaluate population health data and enhance healthcare research and access.

Rethinking the Way We Measure Access to Language-Concordant Care

Traditional physician-to-population ratios overestimate Francophones’ access to French-speaking physicians (FSPs) by ignoring competition from non-Francophones. Using a competition-adjusted approach, this study found that Francophones are 8.8 times less likely to receive language-concordant care than Anglophones/Allophones. These findings have equity implications for healthcare planning and can be applied to other linguistic minority groups.

Ottawa Access to Care and Travel burden by Language

Our project with the Ottawa Neighbourhood Study measured travel burden to primary care physicians for Ottawa residents, focusing on linguistic minorities, using open-sourced data and algorithms.
